My Journey to Finding the Key to Make Change
As you may know, the beginning of my spiritual journey was kicked off with my experience with Postpartum Depression. It was then that I learned that my thoughts create my reality. Therefore, I learned that I can change my thoughts to change my reality. That is how I first dipped my toe into personal development.
Once you understand the power of personal development it’s easy to get really excited. You might even think to yourself, “Wow, I feel so empowered!” So you begin your journey to start making changes about yourself. You meditate, visualize, go on a spiritual retreat, buy memberships, and join communities. Somewhere along the way, you re-ask yourself, “What’s the ONE thing?!” Well, you already know the key to change. You’re just not doing it.
Your Identity Prevents you From Making Change
The reason you’re not able to make changes in your life is that you’re hard-wired into your old identities. You are skipping over the key to making change in our lives. How you act. The way you parent. And how you show up as a friend, or co-worker. All these things are wrapped into who you believe you are! You put yourself into a box and you are all the things you believe yourself to be. When you use the words I AM, you’ll see what I mean. For example, “I’m shy, I’m a smoker, I’m depressed,” you are telling yourself this is your personality. Makes sense right?! But as Dr. Joe Dispenza says, “your personality is your personal reality.” So, if you could change your personality, you can change your reality. I love that!
Your personality, or identity, was formed by thoughts that you had throughout your lifetime. When you hear the same thoughts over time they become your identity. You think you’re not smart enough, or pretty enough. But you’re not born not smart. You decided, at some point or another, that you’re not smart, or pretty, or whatever it is that you believe about yourself. When you realize your identity was literally created by thoughts repeated over time, you realize that all you have to do is have new thoughts.
So now you have to say the opposite of those things. “I am smart, I am capable, I am a morning person.” So all those things you’ve been saying you’re whole life? Take it and switch it!
Inundate Yourself With the Same Message
A speaker in the Celebration Effect Community, told us the key to making change in our lives. She said that if you want to change your thoughts to new thoughts, inundate yourself with the same message. This is the ultimate key to making change in our lives! Immerse yourself with that same new idea to implement that new identity. I know it sounds simple, but it’s not easy, right?! When you know the key to change, but you don’t see change, you stop doing it. But that’s not how it works, you’ve got to stay in it!
Stick to the Path
I’ve learned that it doesn’t take 21 days to create a new habit, it actually takes much longer. In my experience, it takes up to three months, or even longer. Your habits create neural-pathways you’ve created your whole life. Similar to walking in a cornfield and creating a path, that’s what the neural pathway looks like in your brain. So when you start to say ‘I’m smart, I’m worthy, or I’m worthy of love” you start to create a new path. The other path is still there, but the new path isn’t quite pushed down enough yet! You’ve gotta keep walking that path every single day.
So what does this path look like? Sticking to your meditations, your affirmations, inundating yourself with the same message. This is the key to change.
Become a Glass of Juice
A great example of making change overtime comes from one of my favorite motivational speakers, Dr. Bob Proctor. He does an experiment where he has one glass of water and one glass of juice. He takes a teaspoon of juice and scoops it into the water and asks, “Do you see a change?” Everyone responds with “no.” He takes another scoop and again asks, “Do you see a change? Does it look like anything else other than water?” He keeps scooping until finally, you start to see a change. My point is that you’re not going to see a change at first, but you’re doing the work. You have to inundate yourself with the same message until you are the juice!
Personal Development Takes Time
We expect to be able to change after a short period of time. Yet, we know practice makes perfect. Don’t expect that one meditation or hypnosis session will make a change. When it comes to personal development you have to put in the work. Just like you would for work or learning to play the piano. In order to re-program your brain, or create a new path, you need to inundate yourself with the same message. What does that mean exactly? Read the same material, look at the same books with the message you want to get across to your unconscious mind. Spend your time re-programming your brain and not letting TV do it for you. Ask yourself, what am I putting in my mind?
