How Do You Improve Your Mindset Through Personal Development

Okay, so you want to have a “more positive mindset”. Or maybe you want to change your mindset so that you can workout more, be more motivated to pursue your dreams, or go after the person you’ve been crushing on. Great! Okay, but how?

First, let’s talk about what mindset really is. It certainly is a buzzword these days, so what does it eve mean? According to the search engine, Duck Duck Go (since that’s what I’ve been using these days), mindset is “a set of assumptions, methods, or notions” or “a person’s world view or philosophy of life.” Meaning, it’s how you see the world. Your perspective.

Okay, so now that we know that our mindset stems from our perspective about the world, then how did we come to that perspective in the first place? Personal development is all about uncovering layers of yourself so that you can make change overtime into the person you want to be. So this is the first step!

Your Mindset Comes from Your Beliefs

Your perspective about the world around you comes from your beliefs. Think about a few of your beliefs for a second. Things like, do you believe in God? What do you generally believe about money? What do you think is possible for you? Are you a lucky person? Do things in life come easily to you or is it difficult? Maybe you hold the belief that life is hard. These are all your beliefs that create your perspective and shape your mindset.

So where do these perspectives come from? You developed your beliefs from a young childhood age. For example, your beliefs about money probably stem from what your parents told you about money when you were young. Maybe your dad was constantly telling you that “money is hard to come by”. Or that “money doesn’t grow on trees.” This taught you that money isn’t free flowing into your life and that it’s super difficult for anyone to make money. And it shapes the way you think about money now.

So, in order to start making changes to your mindset, you have to first start evaluating what your beliefs actually are. Once you understand what your beliefs are, it will be much easier to change them.

Beliefs are Automated

Another thing you should know about your beliefs is that they are automated. Have you ever driven your car and lost track of time? You realize that for the last 15 minutes you haven’t been actively thinking about driving? Kind of scary right!? How were you able to drive the car when your mind was in a completely different place? That’s because of automation. Our brains like to automate things so that we don’t need to think about them and waste energy.

It’s the same thing with our beliefs. Your ideas about money, about people in general, or what’s possible for you, is something you automated long ago. Your brain doesn’t have to actively wonder if something is possible for you or not. You already “seemingly” know the answer. Or do you?

It’s save to say that these automated beliefs are actually very limiting. If you automatically think that something isn’t possible for you, or that money isn’t easy to come by, then it’s going to limit the things you try to pursue or create in your life.

That’s why examining your beliefs to change your mindset is the very first thing you need to be doing in personal development.
